Exxon Mobil is a more varied stock with what are now the largest natural gas reserves in the world. The company is more varied than CVX. I think you can trade both but I like XOM Stock for its slightly faster recovery ability.

In the most basic of terms, options are priced according to risk. If risk is higher, option premiums reflect that risk as most investors use options to protect stock positions. I don’t believe you are missing anything. This is a speculative stock which has typical spec stock option pricing. A lot of small cap speculative stocks have high option prices at various times of the year or during various events such as earnings. If trading in a speculative stock I always recommend setting some kind of stop, preferably a manual one so you have a price point you are willing to get out of a trade at. Just think of the poor people who are in the stock at $6.15. Placing valuations on speculative stocks is a losing business. I know a lot of investors who have lost their portfolios trading in spec stocks.

Added! Thery should show up tomorrow. Whenever a stock is missing, if you type the stock’s trading symbol in the symbol lookup field the tool automatically adds the stock or ETF within about 24 hours.

Past performance varied from 8% in 2011 to 18% in 2009, 2010 and 2016 for the portfolio. Not a lot of trading in it so no way to get the returns much beyond 18%.

I will have the trade tables and full portfolio up this weekend.

It is due to a bid from Kraft Heinz for Unilever which a lot of analysts believe leaves Mondelez out in the cold for possibly being acquired, so to speak. Here are the trades I did. I think Mondelez will rebound but if not I will roll-down.

The original article which discusses the Dogs of the Dow Portfolio as an investment strategy popularized by Michael Higgins in 1991 explains how the strategy functions. https://www.fullyinformed.com/members/howling-dogs-of-the-dow-portfolio-2017/

To get the same level of returns your trade size and the number of stocks being traded in the portfolio should match the portfolio.

By buying 500 shares and selling 5 covered calls for March 24 expiry you are simply buying stock and selling calls. The only strategy to this is hoping the trade works out and the stock is exercised away. There is no “Dogs Of The Dow Strategy” being applied. It is simply a coveed calls trade.

The original concept of the Dogs Of The Dow strategy is to invest in all the stocks that comprise the portfolio. If you choose to invest in only some of the stocks, the return will not be close to the actual portfolio’s return. The strength of the original Dogs Of The Dow concept is investing within all the stocks of the portfoli0o so that those that drop are offset by those that rise. At the end of the year the portfolio is adjusted to include the new top 10 dogs of the Dow stocks.

This article explains how to structure a smaller trade in the Dogs Of The Dow Portfolio https://www.fullyinformed.com/members/strategy-discussion-understanding-setting-up-the-howling-dogs-of-the-dow-portfolio-year-1/

Nice recovery move as expected. The put premiums were just wonderful on the little sell-off and tomorrow they should expire out of the money. I have a lot of cash coming back from the trades in Intel. Still holding my April $39 puts though but did add to them in the selloff.

There is no strategy paper on this. It is a follow along portfolio for those who have been asking for less trading and more a couch potato type of strategy. Today is the first trade. I combine stock ownership with Covered Calls and naked puts. https://www.fullyinformed.com/first-trade-alert-howling-dogs-of-the-dow-portfolio-feb-15-2017/

You are welcome Carol. A lot of investors get sukced into high risk stocks without actually looking at the risk versus what they are earning. The fact that George Soros sold his NVIDIA position out isn’t really a warning but telling investors who chase speculative stocks that at some point you have to realize you have made your profit. These types of stocks can roar higher and then give at least half of the rally back in very short order.
By looking at what you can possibly earn in a high risk stock versus a much stronger big cap stock you will often find the big cap stock to be far more appealing.

I think the stock is heading higher but if the goal is to bring in more income then rolling now will probably earn more. I am waiting a bit longer but I have added some additional naked puts recently while continuing to hold these at $36 and $36.50

Hi Carol. Your decision comes down to a number of key aspects of selling options for income. This article should make your decision-making easy. The answer right now is wait for better signals and close your other options to get your capital working in other trades. I hope this article explains it more fully https://www.fullyinformed.com/members/the-keys-to-put-selling-decision-making-become-a-better-investor/
