I have been watching wpc and I like the 6% dividend, but I do not like the $5 wide strikes. If you get into trouble and have to rescue the trade, it can be difficult

    That is an excellent question.
CBI has positive earning surprises in the last 4 consecutive quarters. There is a high correlation between past earnings surprises and earnings surprise in the next subsequent period. There is about a 60% chance that a positive earnings surprise will result in a higher stock price right after earnings.
So, my plan is to hold CBI until earnings and then buy a vertical spread just before earnings and hold until 4 days after earnings.
Of course this could all fall apart.
Mike Tyson said everyone has a plan until they get hit in the face.

I have never done a buy-write for a reason, so let me ask you the question:

With the volatility CBI has, you collect 1.80 by the end of July. What do you do if CBI is at $50 the end of July which is certainly a possibility, just due to the volatility of the stock and earnings coming up right after expiration?

    Kevin,
What I might do, and what you could do, is wait until the last week of expiration, and sell calls, or wait until you see a serious break in the momentum and then add to your position.
It might cost you some to wait for the break, but momentum can last way longer than we might think, so I am willing to wait and if I miss it, so be it. I’ll look at it “later”, but for me it’s too dangerous to sell July calls on a ETF that can move 7 points in a day!

CFO since 2013, Katy Rice is named senior managing director in a newly-created internal advisory role focused on examining WPC’s core businesses. She’s replaced with Hisham Kadar who has been chief accounting officer since 2012.
Global Head of Investments Jason Fox adds the title and role of president of the company. He’s been with the company since 2002.

Here is why they were down yesterday:

Macquarie has downgraded KapStone Paper and Packaging Corp. (NYSE:KS) to a ‘Neutral’ rating from ‘Outperform’ yesterday. Macquire not only downgraded KapStone, but all other container board stocks as well, citing price cuts on West Coast container board as the reason behind its downgrades on those stocks.

Sell the $35 puts if you want it. I have done that several times, never got assigned but collected a 1% premium for the month. Makes the dividend even bigger although premiums aren’t reinvested:)

Thanks Amy, I sold July 265 call for $1.7 when it was 238, I almost closed it for over 50% gain before this $20 bump, but my order was not filled, now the call goes up to $5.

Wondering if teddi still holds the short calls, atm I will just hold and hopefully a pullback soon.

Thanks Amy. I also got filled at .75, yes could have gotten .80, didn’t expect the stock to drop another 50c.

I also swing trade OHI, wait for it at 35 or below to buy, and sell at 36.5.

THANKS Kevin….been wanting to own that one for a long time. Always too expensive. I am trying to get in via puts as we speak.

From S.A.: The major averages are having a solid day, with nearly all S&P sectors lit up green, but the REITs – eyeing a ten basis point pop higher in the 10-year Treasury yield – are lower across the board. Boosting rates is good news on Greek debt negotiations and a 4% rally in European stocks.
The IYR is down 0.6%, bringing its loss YTD to 3%, about 600 basis points worse than the S&P 500.
National Retail Properties (NNN -1.5%), Omega Healthcare (OHI -1.2%), Healthcare Trust of America (HTA -1.6%), Gramercy Property Trust (GPT -1.9%), W.P. Carey (WPC -1.4%), Simon Property (SPG -1%), Retail Properties of America (RPAI -1%), Public Storage (PSA -1%), Equity Commonwealth (EQC -1.6%), Strategic Hotels (BEE -1.4%), STAG Industrial (STAG -1.4%), Education Realty Trust (EDR -1.5%).

EDIT: filled at .75, could have probably gotten .80; filled too fast!

kapstone paper (KS) is also down 5% today.
I did well selling covered calls 3 months out on KS. But the strikes are $5 wide as I recall.

My thoughts on XBI after taking a beating, is that the market can be wrong longer than you can remain solvent. Until the bio rally bursts with some volume, it’s a momentum trade that scares me to death….well not really to death, but I’m not touching something that goes out into July going against a momentum sector ever again. But that’s just me. One of the largest XBI holdings, BLUE, is up $7 today. Just hard to fight that.

Some day, they might start to lose altitude, but not today. JMO
